She is uniquely qualified to professionally assist pilots through their Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) neurological evaluation and offer personal support and guidance every step of the way, ensuring that pilots can complete the entire process with both clarity and confidence.

In addition, here are some tips that may help you as you prepare for your FAA neuropsychological evaluation:

Sleep Well

Research indicates that proper rest can play a pivotal role in test performance. Never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep, which can affect focus, memory, comprehension, problem-solving, energy levels for optimal productivity and emotional regulation – helping us to remain calm in stressful situations, such as test taking.

Without a proper night’s rest, you may have trouble concentrating, retaining and consolidating new information which could lead to difficulty processing information and careless mistakes. Lack of sleep can also hinder our creativity and problem-solving skills, leaving us feeling fatigued or anxious.

So make certain that you are well rested before your evaluation. There are several ways to help you promote a healthy night’s sleep before your evaluation. One is to begin establishing a consistent sleep schedule, so that your body and mind are conditioned to rest at a certain time and wake up feeling refreshed at another. It is also important to create an environment conducive to sleep. This means that your bedroom should be comfortable and distraction-free – with no cellphones, laptops, television or light. Avoid caffeine and big meals, and practice deep breathing to help wind down before bed.

Don’t Overthink It

There is no real way to prepare. There are no online tools, websites or practice tests.  Remember that you are not being tested for your flight knowledge or piloting expertise.

Neuropsychological evaluation is required by the FAA in cases where it has been determined critical to assess neurocognitive deficits in pilots. These neuropsychological assessments help to assure that a pilot is operating at an acceptable level of cognitive function; CogScreen tests are designed to assess cognitive ability as it relates to essential and safe flight operations.

The Importance of Instructions

First things first. Pay close attention to instructions during your FAA neuropsychological evaluation. It is well worth it to take the time to thoroughly think through what is being asked of you to further ensure that your answers are appropriate.

The Eyes Have It

Plus, it may sound silly, but DON’T FORGET YOUR GLASSES! If you happen to wear reading glasses, there is nothing worse than being without them during a test.

What Your Neuropsychologist Needs from You

Prior to your FAA neuropsychological evaluation, your neuropsychologist will need access to the following if it has not been previously submitted to the FAA:

  • Copies of all your medical records regarding prior psychiatric and substance-related hospitalizations, observations and treatment; and
  • A complete copy of your agency medical records can be sent directly via Request for Airman Records (FAA Form 8065-2).

In Summary

Proper preparation for your neuropsychological evaluation can ensure that you are in the best frame of mind for test taking, and knowing that you are adequately prepared can alleviate the stress of test taking…and good performance on the FAA neuropsychological evaluation can reduce the amount of additional testing required, saving you valuable time and money.
